Ophthalmic ultrasound is a fundamental diagnostic tool that uses high-frequency sound waves to obtain detailed images of the internal structures of the eye, especially when the ocular media are opaque or when it is necessary to evaluate the posterior segment and the orbit. It is non-invasive, radiation-free, and delivers immediate results. A-mode (biometry) accurately measures the axial length of the eye, a key parameter for IOL calculation in cataract surgery, while B-mode provides a cross-sectional image of the eye’s interior to detect retinal detachments, hemorrhages, or tumors, even when a dense cataract prevents visualization of the fundus.
