The specular microscope is a diagnostic device that evaluates the corneal endothelium, the innermost layer of the cornea, responsible for maintaining its transparency. Since these cells do not regenerate, assessing their condition is essential to the patient’s visual health. In a non-invasive and non-contact manner, the device captures images of the endothelium and analyzes cell density, cell size and morphology, and corneal thickness. It is especially important prior to cataract or intraocular surgeries, in the evaluation of donor corneas for transplantation, in graft follow-up, and in the diagnosis of conditions such as Fuchs’ dystrophy.
